Wendy Kathleen was born in Southern California on March of 1974. From her earliest memories, Wendy can remember being on the ice. With her Father hailing from Canada with a hockey stick in hand and her mother entranced by beauty of figure skating and Peggy Fleming, it took little time before they had Wendy lacing up a pair of skates and whirling around the rink. What started as afternoon group ice skating lessons soon grew into private lessons, early morning practices and competitions. As with so many young skaters around the world, Wendy dreamed of going for the Gold. For nine years, Wendy dedicated her life to the sport of figure skating. This included 3 hour practices before school that started at 5 a.m., dance and ballet lessons, diets and discipline. Her dream was cut short at 15, when she became sick and was unable to train at the level she had been. It was at this time that she began to discover a new love. Art began to fill the hole that skating had left. With as much passion as she had shown for skating, she began to illustrate in art.
To bring together her two greatest loves, Wendy has combined her passion and knowledge for figure skating with her love of painting. Her favorite medium to work in is watercolor, to which she adds her own personal, ethereal touch. Wendy chooses to focus her paintings exclusively on the main figure, with the background serving as a flow of billowing colors, with which to move the viewers’ eye along the image and feel the energy. Wendy's goal is to illustrate through her art the feelings of beauty, freedom, artistry, and athletic strength that figure skating is. Today, Wendy juggles her time between painting, running her art business and teaching high school art. She still makes time to get to the rink, where you will find her skating with her husband Brian, who is a current recreational hockey player. For her 30th birthday, Brian gave Wendy a new pair of custom skates, something she had not had since retiring. Kaleb, Wendy's son, also joins mom and dad on the ice, starting his skating at 15 months old. For Wendy, there is still nothing like the smell of freshly zambonied ice and the sound of blades cutting through it. It is there that ice dreamz begin.
